With everyone being locked in for the third time in the space of a year Instagram have decided to launch multi-participant IG live video chats within the next few weeks, Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri has stated:
“We have been working on live groups – finally. We’re releasing the ability to go live with more than one other person, so with up to four other people, in the next couple of weeks, which we’re really excited about”
Instagram had initially tested the new feature with Indian members back in December as there was a rise in the interest of live streaming in the Indian market due to ban on TikTok in the region. So it launched a new trial of multi-participant live-streams to boost user interest. Now according to reports the new feature went down extremely well with Instagram live views increasing by over 60% in India in 2020.
In addition to this Instagram’s has been working under the radar on the option for almost a year, with Mosseri stating in a Q and A session last spring they were looking to enable more guests in Live broadcasts:
“Right now you can only go live with one other person at a time, we’re looking into if we could expand that, but it’s not clear that that is the most pressing thing that we can add to Live, versus just getting stability up, adding more features, making it available on web, etcetera.”
So although this has been a long time coming and the new feature could open up a range of possibilities, you can conduct interviews, invite fans and customers onto streams, share the stage with influencers, the list goes on.
There is no official date of when the multi-participant live streams feature will be released but expect and update from Instagram in the very near future.
