Social media usage statistics –
It may come as a surprise to absolutely no one that the human race is spending more time on social media than ever before, you only have to look on public transport on your morning commute to see the vast majority of people buried in their phones expertly imitating the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Having said this it is hardly surprising, we have more access to social media than ever before and people are lapping it up, so much so that some regions have implemented mobile user specific footpaths to stop people running into each other, what a glorious world we live in. Nevertheless statistics have been released about social media usage and without further a due let’s jump in.
Back in 2012 when the Olympics were taking place in London people on average were spending an hour and a half on social media, well seven years later this has jumped to nearly an hour more and the average time which people spend on social media is two hours and twenty three minutes. In terms of the global population as a whole approximately 45% of the populace use social media and a staggering 60% say they are constantly connected whilst 98% have used social media in the past month, that equates to nearly 3.48 billion people using social media every month.
In terms of what the most popular used platform and what people spend most of their time on it is hardly surprising that Facebook wins the battle with people spending an average of 58 minutes per day with its sister company, Instagram, coming in a close second with 53 minutes being the average. Again there is nothing too groundbreaking here but the only slight surprise is that Twitter falls well short with the average user spending only 3 minutes a day on the app.
In terms of regions and countries then there are surprising statistics, if you were a betting man or woman you would assume that the region that spends most of its time of social media is North America or Europe. Well keep your money in your pocket because the region that spends most of its time on social media with a whopping average of 3 hours 32 minutes is Latin America with the Middle East coming in a close second with 3 hours 12 minutes. In terms of countries then you would assume with the stats above that a Latin American country would be the most, well you have Brazil, Argentina & Columbia in the top five but the gold medal goes to the Philippines with an average of just over four hours.
As we can see social media is very much a part of everyday lives for the vast majority of us, its global reach cannot be denied and with the growth in technology as well I suspect these figures will only continue to grow over the next few years, we are not far off people spending more time on social media then they do on sleep.
